About the author

Naoya Furuta

Born in Japan. He is a professor at Public Policy Department, Taisho University and a Coordinator at IUCN Japan Liaison Office in Tokyo, Japan. Having studied both natural and social science, he has studied and implemented various conservation and development projects including sacred natural sites. He himself practices Shugendo at Omine mountain range and was granted as a Sendatsu — a leader. He edited the book “Asian Sacred Natural Sites” together with Bas Verschuuren and translated the IUCN-UNESCO Best Practice Guidelines No.16: Sacred Natural Sites: Guidelines for Protected Area Managers into Japanese.
